Promoting Peace in the Aftermath thorough Music

E-mail Print PDF

The Interfaith Dialog Center and the First Presbyterian Church of Rutherford brought Muslims and Christians together on an Interfaith Music Event on September 25, 2005 at 11.30 AM to make and enjoy music. The event, which was dedicated to promote interfaith dialogue, was held at the First Presbyterian Church of Rutherford, NJ with attendance of more than 150 guests. Interfaith dialog is necessary for a sound society. Music is universal and has the ability to transcend cultural boundaries.

Choir of the Church and Turkish Musicians performed hymns and songs they had prepared. The musical selections varied widely in style, aptly reflecting both faith communities. Each selection was enthusiastically received by an appreciative audience of music lovers.

Program started with welcome speeches by Rev. Barbara Lucia and IDC’s senior advisor Mr. Ahmet Kurucan. Children's Choir of the Church inspired smiles as the youngsters called us to peace through their music. The talent of both the youth and their director was apparent as they sang.

After the Church’s adult and children choirs performed their music, Turkish culture part of the program started with ‘adhan’, call to prayer.

Music was followed by a lunch of Turkish and American food, and conversations between two faith groups. Different salads, cakes, Turkish beef and chicken kebabs, stuffed grape leaves, rice, bulgur and Turkish dessert, baklava, were included in the menu.

During the lunch, Muslims and Christians had good conversations and new friendships were established.

As they became friends, they exchanged business cards, contact info and Muslims invited their new friends for Ramadan Iftars at their homes, as Ramadan is approaching.

Members of the church stated that they had listened to the 'Call to Prayer' and Qoran recitation for the first time in their lives and that they had not known they had their own beautiful melody.

Building healthy religious relations throughout the community is vital to an area shadowed by one of the largest acts of hate in recent history, the September 11 attacks. This event, as we observed, contributed to mutual understanding, respect, and building our bright future on shared hopes and values.

Event Date: Sunday, September 25, 2005 – 11.30 AM
Place: First Presbyterian Church 1 East Passaic Ave., Rutherford, NJ 07070
